25 years of great burgers

On April 24, 1989, USA Today asked readers to share their favorite burger joints. The article, "Readers point the way to hamburger heaven," was in honor of the 100th anniversary of the hamburger.

A lady named Shannon Szumierz had voted Duffy's Tavern as Florida's best burger, stating that "the restaurant is no larger than a small bedroom, but the burgers, made with fresh ground meat, are done on an old seasoned grill."

Since then, not much has changed - Duffy's is continuously recognized for its out-of-this-world burgers. In fact, Shannon came to enjoy the same great taste of the seasoned grill exactly 25 years later, on April 24, 2014.

A huge thank you to all of our loyal customers, like Shannon, who return year after year to taste Anna Maria's best burgers!

1. Ride the Island Trolleyanna maria island trolley
For years the Anna Maria Island Trolley has been taking its visitors to all of their favorite shops and restaurants. These cheerfully colored vehicles operate on a daily schedule around the island between 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. every 20 minutes from the Anna Maria City Pier on the north to Coquina Beach on the south.

They are also prefect for nights out on the town- don't drink and drive, take the trolley instead!

2. Enjoy the sunset
Florida's gulf coast is blessed with its west-facing, breath taking views. Take advantage of it tonight, the possibilities are endless!

Gather a group of friends for a sunset picnic on the beach, go for a romantic stroll, or maybe cast out a line and hope for some bites!

3. Robinson Preserve
This Bradenton landmark is recognized as a huge family activity hot spot. Rent a kayak or a couple of paddle boards and enjoy the calm waters of this 600+ acre nature preserve.

dunedinpipebandAs many of you may know, there is an annual St. Patrick's Day parade that takes place on Anna Maria Island. This year, it's happening on Sunday the 16th, so that everyone can attend.

There's also something else happening this year, and we couldn't be more excited! The City of Dunedin Pipe Band is coming to Duffy's after the parade, to play live music right here on our patio.

The parade starts 4 p.m., but Duffy's is the place to be after! Come in Sunday, March 16th for drinks, good food and live music. Food specials are yet to be announced, but will happen on Monday the 17th as well.

Duffy's Takes TBT Burger Crown!

Photo Nov 20 1 09 37 PM"BRADENTON – Council's Recreation in downtown Bradenton has consistently held the title of best burger among TBT readers since we first started the poll in 2010. But this year, the crown leaves the mainland for the sandy shores of Anna Maria Island and the iconic, family-owned burger joint whose history dates back 55 years.

The original Duffy's was a “two-story cracker shack” across the street from the Manatee Public Beach, opened by Claude "Duffy" Whiteman in 1958. In 1971, Pat "Miss Duffy" Geyer bought the business from Whiteman "to keep her five daughters off the streets and out of trouble." Read the rest of the article here...
